Student Overview

Student Analysis: Text

Student Population

At Western Illinois University, there is a total of 1,220 full time students enrolled as of fall 2021 and a 157 part time. Almost all of these students will have to have some form of health insurance, but more than likely will have the student health insurance. According to a recent study it was said, "Young people ... they don't care. They think they're young forever and health forever" (Palmedo et al., 2018). This population of students will benefit from this information as described in the content analysis section. It is prime time within their developmental process to retain this knowledge at a first year level.

Student Needs

Student Analysis: Text

In a study, Nobles et al. (2018) states that approximately half of the students indicated they had been confused about their health insurance plan, with one-quarter of students stopping or delaying medical care due to confusion. A student's health should be the number one priority for any university. If these students are not healthy on many levels, it can and will affect them. The effect will be seen first on an academic level, then social/emotional, and continue down. This trickle-down effect could be a determining factor if a student continues in school. So, not only is this a health issue, but it can also become a retention issue. “Recognizing the cost of bad health can spread beyond the individual…” (Palmedo et al., 2018).

Enrolled Freshman Fall 2021:

For those enrolled in the student health insurance will be required to attend the intervention. At Western Illinois University, students who are taking 9 semester credit hours or more are required to have some form of health insurance. If you do not waive from the student health insurance, it will be automatically added into your student account. With 1,220 students enrolled full-time and 157 part-time, many will end up with Western Illinois University's Student insurance. This will bring more awareness and proactive behavior to students who are unaware of the knowledge.

Prior Experience:

Being able to bring in the insurance coordinator, Health Education Graduate Assistant, and a Healthcare professional will bring ease to those who are new to insurance. Having the background information to present will allow students to be in tuned to listen to the presentation.

It will also be taken into account anyone who has worked with their own insurance in the past. It will be noted that there will be students who have had prior experience with individual insurance due to medical circumstances, family circumstances, and etc.
